If both are near each other then try to aim for the white one. The white ships give you more speed and momentum than the brown ships.You gain momentum when you slam on a ship & you lose momentum when you hit the ground.

Once you lose most of your momentum you can no longer smash ships and you can’t travel further. These two inputs are multiplied against one another to derive your final score.
